The CAVE environment provides an immersive way of viewing 3D virtual environments (3DVE’s). The user is surrounded by multiple canvases displaying 3D content delivered by three stereoscopic projectors. Most modern VE and Game platforms support CAVE environments. The CAVE environment is especially useful when visualizing early architecture designs of real environments since regular display devices, such as desktop screens and laptops, usually distort the sense of space and distances in 3DVE’s.

The modern 3D Virtual Laboratory brings effectiveness to 3D based engineering. In a virtual environment the models are in the same scale as in the final product, which helps to understand and perceive details in a concrete way. 3D Virtual Laboratory creates experiences that also promote the sales and marketing of your products.
Our setup consists of eighth Panasonic PT-DZ6000 series projectors with light output of approximately 50,000 ANSI lumens. The curved screen has seamless image with resolution 5380×1200 and the screen (13 x 2.5m, l x h) provides an opening angle of 180° with a 3.5m radius. Technology to form stereoscopic 3D image is passive hence the projectors in 3D virtual laboratory are double stacked.
We support immediate visualization and modifying possibilities for 3D CAD designs and Building Information Model (BIM) data which makes our large-scale set-up essential for e.g.:

BCO-TIC provides open access services on microscopic imaging for all users from the industry and academics. The Catalysis research environment is tailored for the efficient catalyst development, testing and characterization purposes. The infrastructure is available for both catalysis and photocatalysis research. The flexibility of the environment allows to widen the material studies also beyond the catalysis research. Currently, the main testing activities are related to purification and/or utilization of emission compounds in mobile and industrial exhaust/flue gases (NOx, CO, CO2, HC, PM, VOC) and cleaning of waters/wastewaters using catalytic and hybrid technologies.
Production of clean fuels and utilization of waste-based materials in environmental applications are the activities of today. More recent research areas – the utilization of emission gases in the production of chemicals and fuels, and as reaction media support the circular economy. For the material characterization several techniques are available including: physisorption (BET-BJH, microporosity), chemisorption, temperature-programmed studies (reducibility, OSC, acidity, basicity), spectroscopy (DRIFT, PAS, IR-microscopy (FPA), PM-IRRAS, FT-Raman, Timegated Raman), elemental analysis, etc.
Catalysis research laboratory provides knowhow, testing and characterization services. This can be enabled via joint research projects or special services. The research needs of the client will be discussed in each case and custom-made services will be offered. Typical services are related for example to finding out the cause for the deactivation of a catalyst, finding the activity or the stability of the catalyst in certain test environments, resolving the specific catalytic information (e.g. acidity, basicity, specific surface area), determining the material emissions [RK1] [EM2] and finding out the surface characteristics of the material.

CEMIS-Oulu is a Measurement Technology Unit in Kajaani University Consortium. It is a research unit completely dedicated to applied research. The Kemi Mine is owned by Outokumpu Chrome Oy, a subsidiary of Outokumpu Oyj. It is located in Elijärvi, in the municipality of Keminmaa, to the north of Kemi. The Kemi Mine is the largest underground mine in Finland, with an annual production capacity of 2.7 million tonnes of ore. It is also part of the integrated ferrochrome and stainless steel manufacturing chain owned by Outokumpu in the Kemi-Tornio region. The Kemi Mine has approximately 400 employees every day, both employees of Outokumpu and contractors.
The purpose of the Kemi Mine in the long production chain from chromite ore to stainless steel is to produce concentrates from ore as raw material for the manufacture of ferrochrome at the ferrochrome plant located in Tornio. The chrome contained in the ferrochrome generated as a product at the ferrochrome plant – used as an alloying material in the steel manufacturing process – is what makes the steel manufactured at the Tornio steel plant stainless.
Operational safety, cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness are characteristics of the Kemi Mine. Low accident figures, together with clean and properly organized working environments, both 500 meters underground and on the surface, make an excellent setting for effective production, modern technological applications and the use of advanced working methods. Operations cause only a minor environmental impact because of the insolubility of the oxidic chromite ore, the chemical-free concentration method based on gravity, and the sealed process water circulation covering the entire mine and concentration process.

MIKES Metrology is a research area specialised in measurement science at VTT and its facilities are located in Espoo and Kajaani. We provide measurement solutions for industry, commerce, and research. As the National Metrology Institute of Finland, MIKES Metrology realises the SI units and provides the basis of reliability for measurements in Finland.
High-accuracy measurements require good facilities. When targeting the lowest uncertainties, the measurement accuracy is often limited by the properties of the laboratory where the experiments are performed. Moreover, the development and characterisation of high-accuracy equipment is easier, when noise sources rising from the environment are eliminated. The MIKES building at Espoo is designed especially for metrology and accurate measurements. It has unique laboratories with respect to the stability of ambient conditions, electric noise and vibration isolation. Furthermore, the laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for a variety of precision measurements. MIKES Kajaani offers facilities for force, torque, mass and water flow measurements.

OMS continuous mini-pilot research environments consist of mineral beneficiation processes and laboratory equipment. The environments have been developed together with industry and research institutes. Wireless sensor and actuator network (WSAN) is a group of distributed specialized sensors to monitor physical or environmental conditions, such as temperature, humidity, pressure, vibration intensity etc., and implement the control based on the results of sensing. Ouluzone Automation is a new R&D environment and centre for car and working machinery technology and infrastructure construction automation and robotics. The owner of the facility and large land area is Oulu City.
There is a company Ouluzone Operointi Oy, which operates the practical use of the centre. Currently, there are new building facilities as well as several different racecourses available for both the car racing purposes as well as for technology and process test purposes.
In collaboration with Business Oulu, University of Oulu, VTT, OAMK and OSEKK, the centre has versatile available resources for car and work machinery experiments and information modeling based automation tests. ECE has membrane separation equipment for liquid and gas phase, and adsorption and distillation equipment which can be used for e.g. water purification and for the separation of alcohol-water mixtures. Membrane separation equipment can also be used for the separation and concentration of valuable components, for the recovery of dissolved heavy metals and nutrients and for the separation of volatile compounds.
We offer testing of micro-, ultra- and nanofiltration as well as reverse osmosis in laboratory and bench scale withvarious flat sheet, tubular and hollow fibre membrane units.
Automated bench scale Äkta Crossflow system is available for fast and reliable micro- and ultrafiltration crossflow filtrations for screening and process optimization.
Laboratory scale pervaporation unit is available for separation and dehydration of organic compounds from aqueous solutions and separation of organic mixtures.
Membrane separation of gas mixtures (e.g. methane and CO2) can be performed with a laboratory scale gas membrane unit. Gas flows (e.g. CH4, CO2 and H2S) can be analysed online.
Statistical design of experiment can be used to obtain all valuable informationfrom the experiments and to optimize the experimental setup.

VLC (Visible Light Communication) Lab is an experimental research space created to implement, develop, test and validate technologies related to optical wireless communications, particularly visible light communications. Several test-beds have been developed in this laboratory during the past years, and this development work continues, aiming at creating a number of practical solutions as well as novel communication concepts exploiting light.

Our facilities are related to field measurements, laboratory, pilots and modelling applications including various water and soil analysis equipment’s and measures. We can do in-situ and laboratory measurements and analysis. Our laboratory have various equipment’s, including those for expansion, frost heave, leaching and adsorption tests, and oedometer. Among the properties to be determined are the particle size distribution and structure, hydraulic properties, shear strength and compressibility. We have facilities for various in-situ measurements from water quality, quantity and soil properties for one time and/or continuous measurements campaigns. There is also a Picaro-instrument for measuring stable isotopes from waters.
Modelling applications includes modelling of catchment hydrology and water quality, hydrodynamics, groundwater and numerical or physical geotechnical modelling.
Research unit and laboratories offer services to projects, institutes and companies. For example, analysis related to surface-, and groundwaters and wastewaters and physical and chemical properties of soils, waters and industrial by-products. We also offer know-how and expert knowledge from hydrological and geotechnical applications in environmental engineering fields
Water Resources and Environmental Engineering Research Unit have a close co-operation with national and international research partners, environmental authorities, industry, and end-users.
We seek active collaboration in the fields of both research and teaching with local, national and international partners. If you are interested in cooperation in large research projects or smaller analysis services, you can familiarize with the laboratory’s research know-how and equipment.
